Can CBD help with Depression?

Yes, a recent study in 2019 administered CBD to rats and then released them to solve various puzzles and challenging obstacles. The rats with CBD were better able to cope and progress through frustrating situations than the rats without CBD. The studies’ conclusion is CBD combats the feeling of helplessness, a common self-descriptor among patients battling depression.

MDD (Major Depressive Disorder) is the clinical name for what we know as depression, today. The condition is more prevalent among women than men and while there are lots of treatment options available many of them come with unwanted side effects.

Side effects of the usual medications treating depression can range from one or several of the following:

  • headaches
  • nausea
  • trouble sleeping
  • dizziness
  • diarrhea
  • weakness and fatigue
  • anxiety
  • stomach upset
  • dry mouth
  • sexual problems such as low sex drive, erectile dysfunction, or ejaculation problems

There are more dramatic side effects as well:

  • increased or lowered blood pressure
  • increased appetite which leads to weight gain
  • feelings of isolation, worthlessness, or guilt
  • mania, which is periods of great excitement, euphoria, delusions, and overactivity in those with bipolar disorder
  • insomnia
  • confusion
  • visual disturbances

Many CBD studies are becoming more and more accepted because of them being a natural and effective alternative to common prescription options. Most people aren’t looking for the side effects of most antidepressants if they can manage and heal from MDD using CBD.

So what makes CBD effective when treating MDD?

CBD is derived from the cannabis plant and it is absorbed through our ECS. Our ECS is a prime delivery system to the serotonin production factory within our minds. Stimulating the production of serotonin is the primary target for medications treating depression. Higher levels of serotonin bring a sense of well-being and calmness. It promotes a positive self-awareness and gives the recipient a peaceful mood.

Remember, CBD is helpful when given to patients but the psychoactive component of the cannabis plant can be overwhelming and cause paranoia in its users. THC, a common name for the psychoactive component of the cannabis plant, is also an addictive substance and should be used with caution.

CBD products can be found without the THC component and are the most effective way to treat your depression, just be sure to check the ingredients and make sure there is no THC present. Most CBD products sold will not contain THC unless otherwise stated.
